Magnitude 9.0 Northeastern island, Tohoku, Japan Death toll / Impact on people A total of 15,891 deaths had been confirmed according to the japan national police agency.Mostly died by drowning. More than 2,500 people were still reported missing As the waves reached a 128 feet, it flood many islands as far as 10km reaching the Miyako city, destroying houses mainly at the costal areas. The total damages from the earthquake and tsunami are estimated at $300 billion dollars (about 25 trillion yen), according to the Japanese government. The cause of earthquake The earthquake hit Japan, along a subduction zone where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide. In a common subduction zone, one plate usually slides beneath another into the mantle,Then, the great plates which are rough and sticky stick together, building up energy that is released as earthquakes. East of Japan, the Pacific plate dives beneath the overriding Eurasian plate. Side effects Besides the earthquake which has already caused a huge chaos, the tsunami which totally ruined the houses by the coastal area. The Fukushima Daichi Nuclear leaked opening a dangerous radioactive leak which made the other nuclear reactors shut down and closing the whole area. |

Magnitude 7.8 Manila in the Nueva Ecija province. Death toll / Impact on people After days, workers pulled bodies from the demolished buildings in Baguio. The closest estimate is that 1,000 bodies were eventually recovered. At least another 1,000 people suffered serious injuries. As a six-story building completely collapsed, trapping almost 250 students and teachers inside. Rescue efforts saved many, but the rest of the victims who did not die in the collapse were found dead later from dehydration because they were not pulled out in time. The quake left an estimated US$369-million worth of damages, and eventually a total of 2,412 people dead inside trapped buildings The cause of earthquake Baguio, sitting on at least seven fault lines, is now listed as one of the most risk-prone cities in Asia. Scientist have predicted that a earthquake will occur but they were not sure of the exact time that it would hit and so they didn't have and warning system in place to help notify the public . In addition to the risk of earthquakes, the area’s high annual rainfall increases the likelihood of deadly landslides. Side effects The earthquake had already caused havoc and collapsed many of the buildings trapping many.The earthquake also caused landslides along the border which was assisted by the rainy season. A tuba and gold and copper mine in the area also collapsed killing 30 workers. |
